      Louis McLane was born in in Delaware. His father, Allen McLane, was a Revolutionary War hero and Collector of the Customs for the District of Delaware, which basically means he was chief tax collector at the port of Wilmington. Wilmington was a major port at the time so he made good money. MCLANE, LOUIS, (father of Robert Milligan McLane), a Representative and a Senator from Delaware; born in Smyrna, Del., ; attended private schools; entered the United States Navy in as a midshipman on the U.S.S. Philadelphia and served one year; attended Newark College; studied law; admitted to the bar in and commenced practice in Smyrna; served in the War of ; elected to .
